After high school Jesse, Taylor Hale, Jonathan Ritter and Jonathan Sundeen formed hafjest, playing around Colorado. In the Summer of 2002, Ritter moved to Los Angeles in an effort to pursue another project, leaving multi-instrumentalists Hale, Johnson, and Sundeen.
Still as hafjest, Jesse, Hale, and Sundeen began co-writing, switching vocal duties, and changing instruments on practically every song. In 2004, the three of them moved to Los Angeles to pursue this arrangement on a grander level. This project failed to pan out, and Sundeen eventually decided to pursue a solo career, which runs to this day. Following this turn of events, Hale moved back to Colorado.
A chance meeting would bring Jesse and Ritter back together, and they eventually recruited drummer Kendrick Thompson for jam sessions. It wasn’t until Hale moved back to LA in the winter of 2005 that the four of them decided to pursue these jam sessions as a serious project.
The four originally dubbed themselves Slander (for lack of a better band name), with Hale and Jesse sharing front-man and singer/songwriter duties. After a period of experimentation with this arrangement, Taylor took over all of these duties, and the band changed to its’ current name, one owl. During this time, the band solidified their live performance, playing in Los Angeles at venues such as The Viper Room, The Mint, The Good Hurt, Spaceland and The Gig. It was during this time, too, that the band recorded, but never released officially, their ep “intent”, and co-produced their film "3:16:08 - one owl at The Mint".
In the spring of 2008, Johnson and one owl made a cohesive decision and Jesse left the band. Having acted in a few major release films, Jesse continues the pursuit of his acting, and one owl continues the pursuit of their music.
